Practice with Poultices A poultice by definition is a soft moist mass, often heated and medicated, that is spread on cloth over the skin to treat an aching, inflamed, or painful part of the body. You will come to know them as your new best friend. There are a few different types of poultices that are suggested for easing the agony of a gout attack.
The first is a charcoal poultice, best for reducing inflammation. You can whip this up at home by mixing half a cup of activated powdered charcoal with 3 - 7 tablespoons of ground up flaxseed. When the mixture becomes mealy, add warm water to turn it into a paste. Apply the paste (charcoal poultice) onto the inflamed joint and cover it with a plastic or cloth dressing. Dressings should be changed approximately every 4 hours and can be left on overnight. Favourite garment alert - be advised that a charcoal poultice can and will stain virtually any fabric it touches. Not already the proud owner of active charcoal powder or flaxseed? Both are readily available at your local health food store or online.
Or you can reach for the vegetable drawer and try a cabbage poultice. Really, the cabbage, unless used in a delightful cabbage roll, is just deadly passed gas waiting to happen. So why not make it work for you as a pain reliever. Here's how you do it. Boil two to three leaves of raw cabbage (preferably organic) in enough water to cover them completely. Keep boiling them until the leaves are soft, and then wrap them in a thin, natural-fiber cloth, like cotton, to form a poultice. Place the cabbage poultice against the gouty area for 2 to 3 hours, two to four times a day. Within a couple of days, you should start to notice a dramatic reduction in pain. Keep up with this daily procedure for as long as you continue to have gout pain.
Your other green alternative is a leek poultice. The mighty leek, great in soups, is a vegetable related to the onion, but with less strong of a flavor. For your purposes you can either devour leeks to help remove uric acid from the blood or use raw leeks to make a poultice to be applied to a swollen joint. That double duty as a gout fighter makes leeks a great candidate for a spot in your vegetable garden.
Make Fruit Your Friend It's common knowledge amongst gout sufferers that the majestic cherry - fresh, dried, or juiced - has been found to both prevent gout attacks and help alleviate inflammation during an attack. Typical dosages are as follows: Cherry fruit - eat at least 10 cherries and no more than half a pound daily. Cherry juice - one 6 ounce glass of cherry juice 1 to 2 times daily. These are just guidelines. Excessive fruit can cause another disaster (in your guts) so only eat or drink whatever your body tells you is a comfortable amount.

If you're fed up and feel like a gout attack is monkey business, why not go all out and go on a banana fast. This is used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine as a way to cure gout naturally. To do the banana fast, eat six to eight bananas every day for two to four days. To make this fast effective, ensure you also drink lots of water and despite temptation, don't eat any other kind of food during the fasting period. The longer you can go eating nothing but bananas, the better chance you'll have of putting a permanent end to your gout symptoms.
Cider House Rules For a semi-delicious and totally effective gout-killing beverage, mix 3 to 4 teaspoons of organic apple cider vinegar with the same amount of raw honey in an 8 oz. glass of water. Drink this fresh and fragrant mixture three to four times a day until the symptoms of gout start to go away. Ultimately, this mixture breaks up uric acid deposits and moves them out of your body, eliminating the gout.
Go Ahead, Touch Yourself Giving yourself a massage isn't exactly the same as a day at the spa but it works in a pinch when you're stuck in bed with a gouty joint. Boil 3 to 4 tablespoons of vinegar with eight to nine rose petals, stirring constantly until the petals have dissolved into the vinegar. Allow the mixture to cool then massage it into the gouty joint three to four times a day until your symptoms go away. Plain, white vinegar found in most pantries works fine for this, or you can use organic apple-cider vinegar if you haven't drunk it all.
Finally, if all your homemade rubs and glugs have still left you in the painful grip of a gouty arthritis attack, there are doctor-prescribed medicinal ways to treat gout. One of the most popular gout medications is colchicine, the generic equivalent of the name brand Colcrys.
Colchicine tablets prevent or relieve gout attacks by reducing inflammation. Colchicine dosages for gout vary: Some people take small amounts of the gout drug regularly for months or years, while others take large amounts of colchicine for gout over a short period of time (several hours). You can buy colchicine tablets online from any reputable licensed Canadian pharmacy with a valid prescription.
Alex Ray advocates for access to affordable healthcare and medication. She has a great deal of sympathy for gout sufferers, and recommends www.colchicine.ca as an online resource for gout information, and Big Mountain Drugs as a reliable online Canadian pharmacy for those who want to buy colchicine from Canada.
